Amy Schectman, President and CEO

Since completing a Masters at MIT, Amy Schectman has worked in the public and nonprofit sectors to advance affordable housing. Recognized for her ability to forge effective partnerships, Amy is a thought leader in holistic approaches to elder housing and care. Amy also plays a state and national advocacy role. She serves on Gov. Charlie Baker’s Council to Address Aging in Massachusetts, has been invited to The White House four times, and has hosted U.S. Congressmen, U.S. Senate staff, and state legislators numerous times. 

A theme across Amy’s career is collaboration to maximize the impact of resources. As Gov. Michael Dukakis’ Director of Capital Budget and Planning, Amy helped convene private, public, and nonprofit interests to ensure state funding for public good. Later, at the Boston Housing Authority, Amy secured the City’s first two federal HOPE VI grants, $50,000,000 each, to revitalize a failing public housing development with comprehensive modernization and the addition of social services, health care, and community programming, offering residents not only shelter but pathways out of poverty as well as promoting neighborhood revitalization.

As the Town of Brookline’s Economic Development Director, Amy instituted holiday festivals to stimulate small businesses, negotiated development/preservation of over 500 affordable housing units, and brought stakeholders together to support a revenue-generating hotel development with public amenities.

Serving the state again, as Director of Public Housing/Rental Assistance, Amy repaired relationships with local housing agencies, led a major rehab of existing state public housing, worked on homelessness prevention and rehousing programs, and enhanced social programs to support housing residents.

Karen Edlund, Chief Financial Officer

Karen Edlund brings over 20 years of experience in the affordable housing and real estate industries to her position as JCHE's Chief Financial Officer. Karen has significant experience in tax credit housing and investment finance. Previously, Karen was CFO for International Housing Solutions, S.a.r.l, a private equity real estate company investing in affordable housing in South Africa. She was previously the CFO for Leggat McCall Properties and a Senior Vice President of Finance for MMA Financial/Lend Lease Corporation and the Boston Financial Group in Boston. She is a past president of the Boston Chapter of Financial Executives International, a board member of the Women's Institute for Housing and Economic Development and on the finance committees for The Dimock Center and Respond, Inc.Karen received her M.S. in Finance at Boston College and her B.A. at Middlebury College.

John Lutz, Chief Operations Officer

John Lutz comes to JCHE with more than 30 years of management experience garnered across the private, public and nonprofits sector(s). The last twelve years were spent in the elder services world serving as associate and executive director at two Western Mass ASAPs (Aging Services Access Points). Prior service included work in the areas of homeless services, child & family services, local government, cultural arts and consumer products.

John has a MS in Public Policy and Management from Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as, a graduate diploma in business and  industrial administration from the University of Auckland (NZ) and an undergraduate degree in Economics from Wittenberg University.

Mary Flatley, Director of Process Integration

Mary Flatley

Mary Flatley brings over 25 years of professional experience helping organizations navigate change, establish priorities, brainstorm solutions and reach consensus on action plans. She has held leadership roles across multiple industries where she provided guidance and direction around resource management, process improvement, project management, organizational development and training initiatives. Organizations where Mary has made significant contributions include: RGI informatics, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, SAP, Houghton Mifflin, Tessera, Digital Equipment Corporation and Harvard Community Health Plan. Prior to joining JCHE, Mary worked at Goddard House, an assisted living facility, designing and delivering programs for residents with dementia. This work was her effort to realign her work to be more service oriented in support of our aging elderly population. She subsequently joined JCHE where she now oversees the human resources function, including performance management, compensation and benefits, HR policies, staffing and promoting the organizational health of JCHE. She also provides strategic direction for our organizational development and leadership programs, including all employee orientation, training, coaching and mentoring programs.

Mary received her B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts.

Deborah Edison, Chief Development Officer

Mary Flatley

Since 1986, Deborah Edison has been raising funds for non-profit organizations helping our country’s most disenfranchised children and adults.  She spent more than 16 years in the HIV/AIDS arena, starting out in New York City with Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the country’s first and largest AIDS service organization. In 1993 she co-founded Classical Action: Performing Arts Against AIDS, which became a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and which continues to raise funds for this cause nationwide through the generosity of the performing arts world (classical music, jazz, and dance) and its enthusiasts. Prior to leaving New York City, Deborah served as the Major Gifts Officer at BC/EFA.

In Seattle for close to 15 years, she headed development and communications for Lifelong AIDS Alliance, Treehouse (King County’s largest organization serving foster children and their caregivers), National Court Appointed Special Advocates, and for YouthCare, the premiere organization in the Pacific Northwest serving homeless youth.  Deborah returned to the east coast in 2013.  After moving to Boston and prior to joining JCHE in 2016, she served as the VP for Development and Communications at Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center.

Lizbeth Heyer, Chief of Real Estate and Innovation

Lizbeth brings to JCHE more than 30 years of professional experience in affordable housing development, planning, policy and advocacy in both the non-profit and public sectors.  Before joining JCHE, Lizbeth served as the Associate Director of Public Housing and Rental Assistance for the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development where she lead gubernatorial initiatives to reform and preserve the state’s public housing system, expand the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program and create the HomeBASE program which provided housing instead of shelter for over 6,000 homeless families.  Lizbeth’s housing career began in 1986 as a community organizer with the Massachusetts Tenants Organization where she led local, state and national efforts to preserve expiring- use housing. Lizbeth worked as a project manager at the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC), eventually becoming Associate Director of Real Estate Development.  During her 15 years at JPNDC, Lizbeth led numerous community planning efforts and developed affordable housing and mixed-use projects totaling over $80M, several of which involved non-profit and for-profit partners including the acquisition and re-development of the 3.5 acre historic Blessed Sacrament property.  

Lizbeth received her Master’s in Urban Planning from M.I.T.
