A bit of magic in our new program center!

Posted: June 21, 2011

Recently a group of kindergartners from the Edison School in Brighton walked over to spend a morning with residents from Ulin House, Leventhal House and Genesis House. They were greeted by older adults with wide smiles who were eager to meet their young guests. The interactions were magical. Within a few minutes, the seniors and children were in small clusters getting to know one another. There were some language barriers for sure: some of the residents only speak Cantonese, Mandarin or Russian. Yet the feeling of happiness that radiated around the room transcended these hurdles.

The morning began with lively exercises for participants of all ages. Then seniors and children worked in pairs to assemble (and enjoy!) a nutritious snack.  As the morning proceeded, the smiles only got wider.  The session was a pilot for a year-long program that will begin in September to promote healthy living for children and older adults.

At the end of the two-hour gathering, one of the adults, who observed the activities and was impressed by the warmth in the room, asked a staff member how long had the participants known each other, clearly assuming that the response would be months. "Oh, about two hours," was the reply. It didn't take long at all for the connections to begin!
