Residents and Volunteers Offer Comfort in wake of Tragedy

Posted: November 16, 2017

Every week at Shillman House, a group of 15 community-engaged residents and volunteers meet to cut, sew and stuff Feelie Hearts (palm-sized hearts made out of red felt) for individuals in need of compassion and connection.

Yesterday, these wonderful folks mailed a box of over 200 Feelie Hearts to the chairwoman of the Sutherland Springs, TX Historical Museum, who will then distribute them to community members at a barbeque honoring the victims of the horrific church massacre that took place in Sutherland Springs. Inside the box we placed the following letter:

To our Friends in the Sutherland Springs Community:

We are residents and community volunteers at Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE), which is an independent and non-sectarian housing community for older adults in the Greater Boston area.

We would like to express our sincerest remorse that lives were lost and that the Sutherland Springs Community has been torn apart by a horrific act.

Please accept these “Feelie Hearts”, that we have made for you, as a symbolic gesture of our love and compassion. When you hold these hearts close and squeeze them, know that fellow human beings are thinking of you as you go through this very difficult time.

We believe that reaching out and supporting others brings out the best in all of us while strengthening and lifting our communities.

With compassion and friendship,
JCHE Shillman House Residents and Volunteers
