J.J. Carroll House featured in Dwell Magazine for low-income housing design
Our J.J. Carroll House was featured in Dwell Magazine as cause for optimism in the design of low-income housing. The article, titled “Well-Designed Low-Income Housing Is Possible,” highlights our work with MASS Design Group’s architect Jonathan Evans to replace an aging public housing complex with a sensitive, modern design that prioritizes the needs of its residents and doesn’t skimp on aesthetics.
“From a design perspective, we wanted to see how we could create density while still fostering community,” says Evans in the Dwell article. The project, which modernized 64 existing apartments and built a total of 142 apartments, was completed in 2024 and placed first in the Affordable Housing category in the nationwide Senior Housing News Architecture & Design Awards.
Focusing on design details, the Dwell article highlights the five interconnected volumes of the new structure, designed with a strong sense of place, featuring natural materials like terra-cotta tiles and wooden fixtures that evoke a homely, yet contemporary feel. The building’s thoughtful use of space includes large outdoor terraces and communal areas that foster interaction among residents, while maintaining the comfort of individual apartments. A notable feature is the lobby, which incorporates reclaimed brick from the old J.J. Carroll House site, honoring the history of the location.
The story is part of Dwell’s annual look at the state of American design. Read the full article.
